So, things are pretty much in their place here at the new apartment. It is huge--and I'm just realizing exactly how huge. It's a two bedroom place, about 1,200 square feet, when the place we moved from was about 450. Needless to say, we don't/didn't have enough stuff to fill it. We also were/are aiming for a bit of an image shift. In the words of my uncle: "losing the cinderblock and 2x4 bookshelves." We do have almost all of our old college furniture in our "second bedroom," which has since been affectionately named "the bachelor pad," due to its shabby coolness. I'll throw some underwear on the futon for good measure.
Houston is different. It's huge. We have three separate shopping centers in three separate directions, each about ten minutes from our apartment. Once we figure out what's at each of them, we may use them regularly, but doing that is the hard part. Phone books don't list things geographically, so we don't know what's nearby. All discoveries of such have come by merely exploring, which is tedious if you're really trying to find, say, a furniture store or an optician. We have found, however, a grocery store, and rediscovered some of the grand items from my childhood in central Texas, namely Mrs. Baird's bread and Bluebell Ice Cream. Our fridge is stocked, and life is good. Work starts on Tuesday (which I will certainly be blogging about), after a fourth of July fling with my recently reunited local extended family.
Hopefully in the next couple of posts, I can rehash some of the last six weeks, as it has been crazy and full of interesting things. Until then, real life awaits. I hope I'm ready for it.
Love to all,
